Managing Challenging Behaviors with Cognitive Decline (Part 1)

Behavioral changes associated with cognitive decline can be one of the most difficult and emotional challenges for caregivers and families to navigate. This educational class explores how changes in the brain impact memory, reasoning, emotional regulation, and perception, often leading to behaviors that are misunderstood as intentional actions.

Caregivers will gain a deeper understanding of why challenging behaviors occur and learn how fear, confusion, pain, overstimulation, unmet needs, and communication difficulties can contribute to distress. Common behaviors discussed will include agitation, wandering, repetitive questions, resistance to care, emotional outbursts, suspicion, and paranoia.

Participants will also learn practical strategies to better respond to these behaviors with empathy and confidence. Topics include effective communication techniques, validation versus correction, environmental modifications, redirection strategies, maintaining routines, and identifying the unmet need behind behaviors.

This class is designed to help caregivers reduce frustration, strengthen connections, and improve the quality of life for both themselves and their loved ones experiencing cognitive decline.
